Amsterdam, Friday December 30, 2005

[ music | 'My Baby Takes the Morning Train' ]

You know how, when you're leaving the house sometimes or whatever, you sometimes realise you've left your keys on the kitchen bench? Or how sometimes you drive away and your sunglasses are on the top of the car still? Or how you come home from a really good party and realise you have no idea where your mobile is and have to call it and call it but noone answers because they've stolen it and don't want to incriminate themselves?
WELL. We experienced something of the sort in Denmark.
We had awoken at the startling hour of 3.30am in order to catch the first train from Hjoerring to Aarhus, thusly to make our way to Amsterdam. Having done so, we found ourselves (rather luckily, I must say) in Aarhus, on the platform, looking for the carriage within which we were to spend the next seven hours. We passed carriage 257. We passed carriage 258. We passed carriage 260.
We stopped.
Did you, also, stop? Have you noticed what is wrong with the above passage? It's like one of those Spot the Difference puzzles, but without differences.
CORRECT! There was no carriage 259, ie OUR carriage.
Tegan approached the conductor.
"Excuse me," she said, indicating her ticket, "where is carriage 259?"
"Errrrr," replied the conductor, with some hesitation, "well... actually, we forgot it."
"You... forgot it?"
"Yes."
THEY FORGOT IT.
IT'S A TRAIN CARRIAGE. IT'S NOT THAT EASY TO FORGET. IT'S NOT EVEN LIKE IT'S THE LAST CARRIAGE. IT'S BETWEEN TWO OTHERS.
IT'S NOT LIKE IT'S A WALLET, OR A HAIRPIN, OR A, A, CHILD OR SOMETHING.
IT'S AN ENTIRE CARRIAGE WHICH CAN HAPPILY SEAT HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE. IT'S REALLY REALLY BIG.
Surely, SURELY someone looked out the window as they were leaving and said
"Er... excuse me? We seem to have left some sort of large metal tubular sort of thing on wheels behind... oh, a CARRIAGE, THAT'S what it's called. OUR WHOLE TRAIN IS MADE UP OF THEM."
So that was wtf moment of the day and no mistake.
We will post more extensively later, only we had to tell you this.
Lots of love,
Katherine and Tegan

p.s. A CARRIAGE!

Well you know 259 is an unlucky number. It was the 259th edition of Physics News Update that confirmed the Ozone depleting qualities of CFS. In 259CE areas of Spain and Britain rebelled from Rome to join the Gallic Empire. There were 259 jelly beans in the jar when I guessed 475. On page 259 Lizzie aquiesces to her father's approval of Lydia's trip to Brighton. You were therefore obviously doomed to failure the moment you were placed on carriage 259. I wonder that they even have a carriage 259. I suspect that in the end it had become an SEP (as in Douglas Adams.....somebody else's problem) and nobody even sees the poor forlorn thing sitting in the railway yards. By the way through our wonderful organisational skills it seems we are off to see Twelfth Night at the gardens tonight and will have to fight our way though the New Years Eve hordes. Luckily though the predicted 42 has been toned down to 33 after yesterdays 39.2. Bit different to the weather over there in euroland. Post early and post long. Love Ya.

Well, I never would have known any of that. The P+P one was particularly interesting.
Hee! Have fun with that? It would have been... interesting.
Hope you enjoyed it.
Love you too.

We did enjoy the show. It was the typical mixture of serious shakespear with a bit of fun. Quite comic in parts. I though the Kath and Kim mini take off was well done inside Shakespear. By the way God managed to completely mamboozle BOM and so itr was going to be 42 but then it got cooler at 11 sdo they said 33 but it ended up being 42.9 just after 5 and it was still over 42 at 7. Mum was very red by the time we sat down. Still a couple of Amsterdam beers and a cool breeze half way through the show made it better. I think it must have got down to mid twenties by midnight.

Sir Toby Belch did a 'Kimmy look at me' moment'. He was played by that little energetic bloke who played Puck in Midsummer. I think the other character was Sir Andrew. Yeah it was pretty good and they of course made the most of the cross gender stuff and even managed an ad-lib at the early family oriented NYE fireworks that went off in the first half. All good stuff.

Brilliant OR annoying. Or whatever.
Tegan and I are planning to get into Rome in time to meet the woman person, but it depends on our train connections and if we're not there, are you happy to meet her and pay the deposit?
Do you need any info to do so?

We'll do our absolute best to be there on time, but Italian trains are notoriously unreliable, so I'll email you and we'll try and sort something out, OK?
Will also mail you Tegan's number.
Happy new year and lots of love!

Hope your new year was good too, and much love to you!
