Katherine: [Wednesday, November 30, 2005 // 3:33pm]
[ mood | okay ]
[ music | 'The Soul Of Man Never Dies' ]

I know it's been a while, and I feel kind of guilty, what with Tegan bombarding you with recollections. So I am come to your rescue, much like St. George, who is on my mind because I just wrote a 1500 word essay on the Orsanmichele, which I am taking a break from before footnoting properly.
I've also been lax with my diary, which means I have no record of the last few days, but they've just been so busy. I gave my site presentation on Monday, and that seemed to go OK.
Yesterday was Siena, which was gorgeous. We saw Catherine of Siena's preserved head and finger. Rock. Got lost, but we found ourselves again. More importantly, GOT TO SEE THE ALLEGORY OF GOOD GOVENMENT AND BAD GOVERNMENT. SO much better in real life. Got a canvas bag with Pax on it, in memory of my arguments in Renaissance last semester about whether she was supressing or supported by the pile of armour beneath her. The Sienese cathedral was awesome as well - only Lydia, Hazel and I went in (everyone else went for coffee!) - but there were some beautiful frescoes and marble inlays and a Donatello, so it was very much worth it.
Today we saw the Brancacci chapel, which was beautiful, and Masaccio's Trinity and the Tornabuoni chapel.
One thing we're seeing everywhere is the lasting impact of the floods in the sixties. It damaged so much beautiful artwork, and also uncovered so much. Sort of a mixed curse. Can you have a mixed curse? I don't know. But anyway, being a History nerd, the way historians and curators flew in from all over the world to save some of the greatest artworks of Western civilsiation is something I find incredibly inspiring and reassuring I guess, too.
Am having a slight SLIGHT breakdown due to lots of work being due and getting lots of interesting/confusing news from home and missing my family and missing my friends without actually wanting to be in on that whole situation, complicated as it sounds at the moment.
Speaking of friends, apparently my first batch of postcards is coming through. Please don't be insulted if you don't get one. I tend to lose people's addresses, so it's just those of you whose addresses I have AND who have asked for a postcard. The following people/groups of people SHOULD receive one: Claire, Bon, Kel, Nick, Jordan, Elise, Katrina, my family, Mrs. Brotchie, Biala and Koolyangarra. If they don't get there, hat may be because I forgot to leave room for stamps on many many of them, so the stamps might be in weird places.
The weekend off is coming up and most people are going away, so I'll get the room to myself, which might give me a chance to recharge and not be so snappy with these people who I don't even really know.
I hope you were all suitably impressed by Tegan and my appearance on television last night - apparently World Comedy FINALLY came on and you could see up Tegan's nose, which is not surprising given that that's where they were stubbornly shoving the camera. What with that and the Scardies DVD we're practically famous, in a not way. But yeah. If you taped it, can you save the tape for me? Coz I want to see it.
So yes. In summary, course content and teaching and everything is WONDERFUL, and eveything I'd hoped for. Things otherwise are a bit weird, but I think I'm probably more or less on top of it all.
And it'll be even better when I meet up with Tegan of course.
Love you all a lot.
And please, if you're reading, COMMENT. Even if it's just once in the whole trip. Just so we know who's reading, OK?
Love, Katherine.

Confusing news from home? Well I have been confused going on 40 years now so join the club. I'll add to the confusion with some more news from home. Abuelo finally decided that not everyone on television wore red horizontal stripes, combined with the total breakdown of his VCR he has embarked on an electronics upgrade program where I do all the work and he gets to call me over more often for 'remote malfunction' crises. Anna decided her money was burning a hole in the bankers pocket and bought herself a digital camera. Luckily her card hasn't arrived yet and so she can only take batches of 10 photos, otherwise we would have nose shots here too. The flooring for the family room arrives tomorrow and so the next two weekends will be dedicated to tidying up, emptying half the house and ripping up carpet. Oh and in the middle of laying the floor the new curtains arrive. Well thats it from the soulless consumerist proleteriat. Now onto the other news.

Mum feels that you are in desperate need of a chat with her. So do yourself a favour and call her. She on the other hand is totally cool about not hearing from you for a while, especially given that the new job, and its part time nature, gives her some wonderful opportunities to take up some creative pursuits.....like ironing my shirts. When we read your post this morning Mum and I did the reading the entrail thing coz you sounded a bit down, or at least there was a lot less verve in the posting than normal. So is there 'trouble down pit?' or is it just a bit of homesick blues ? Mum also thought it might be because you are working hard and we all know hard work does not agree with you. Well genetically that comes down the maternal line. I on the other hand being a workaholic am finding it very difficult to slack off this morning answering your post rather than going to work. (Or WORK!!! as Maynard G Crebbs would have it). By the way Abuelo says we should not expect to hear from you as often, he reckons once your over there having a good time you'll forget to keep in touch. What's the psych term ? Projection ? Just coz he never calls when he goes o/s.

The girls are generally fine. Anna is very much the teenager and therefore a bit bipolar. We wait with trepidation each morning to see if we have Anna or Anakin. Laura is kind of finished so is having lazy days. I suggested that she should plot the frequency of your postings over time against Tegans and that this would make a greatemaths revision exercise. She poked me with a stick again. Somehow she managed to convince us to let her have a New Years Eve BBQ. I blame the Italian wine your mother is buying whilst you are there. By the way I am not looking forward to Danish wine. Nice people and all but they know diddly squat about wine. Oma and Opa are well. They love to read your postings and always have a thousand questions, or at least Oma does, Opa just smiles contentedly. Oh I forgot to mention we are considering a family membership of the Nunawading Aquatic Centre/Gym. I'm looking to develop a six pack........Can't you just see the Sanchez tribe up early on a weekend pumping and iron and being motivated. It's almost a cliche.

Well better get off to work or I might start enjoying myself. Loves and kisses from all of us.

Ha! I laugh at your role as remote malfunction man.
Anna told me about her camera, and sent me several very large pictures of iguanas and so on to prove it. More power to her. Avoid nose shots at all costs. Theyre just not flattering.
She must use her camera to send pictures of the new floor and curtains, yes?
Am looking forward to chatting to Mum on the weekend. Yes, a little bit homesick, and a little bit put out at ACTUALLY having to work, but more stressing about things that I thought Id be able to leave in Melbourne. Friend issues and so on. All feeds into me being a bit of a bitch here which doesnt improve matters and so it goes on.
Hahaha! Abuelo probably parties more than me when he goes overseas. Probably he doesnt call because hes out getting drunk with Marga.
Explain Ankin? I dont understand.
You shouldnt have told me that about Danish wine. Although all things considered, I know nothing about wine, and the wine here has been a bit hit and miss. The wine in Volterra for example was TERRIBLE, but the wild boar pasta was very good.
Glad Oma and Opa are doing well and enjoying my posts.
HA gym. Thats funny.
Love and kisses back.

Had to add this coz I knew you'd love it. On the way in to work I read an article in the paper. It appears that 30 of the brightest theologians in the Catholic church are considering the fate of limbo. Of course you know that with my bad back and my Spanish heritage I am a paso doble man myself. Doen't it make you feel great to know we live in a world where the greatest moral question of the day is if the fate of limbo is ....welll ...in limbo ?

That is possibly the awesomest thing ever in the whole world.
In other theological news, did you know theyre trying to canonise Savonarola? *Mind boggles*

Savanarola canonised ! Let's canonise all book burning homophobics and be done with it. Being there, can't you just imagine Boticelli throwing his own paintings on the bonfire of the vanities. Or maybe they want to canonise hime for having excommunicated him tortured him and then overseen him get burned and hung. Big swing in the old populariy stakes. Are they now saying oops maybe we went a little overboard, maybe when he called the Pope a libertine sodomite he might have been onto something ?

Some history just never dies.

Hee, nose shots *g* I didn't see the nose shot, but I saw you guys, and I recorded the special so I can arrange a copy *g*

There's something both creepy and cool about a preserved head and finger...why only the head and a finger? What happened to the rest of the body? What did they want with a head and a finger??

Try not to give in to breakdown...tempting as it might be. Crazy young ladies screaming in a foreign language don't go down well in ANY country *G* Focus on the work for now and deal with what's happened at home when you get back *G*

You are truly an angel!
I actually have no idea where the rest of the body is. The thing that grosses me out most is that they had to chop those off. Where to these people get off, desecrating the dead? EW.
Am doing my utmost not to break down.
Deal with it, hey? Thats a bit novel. Not sure if I can cope with dealing with it rather than ignoring it... :D

You're sounding all stressed and examsy...YUK!

Trust me nothing that interesting/confusing could possible top a fabulous trip overseas. Plus, it will all be here when you get back! Fabulousness and issues combined!

Thankyou for my postcard *loves* and as promised no nagging for a fortnight! :P

I don't think many other people would be excited about the good/bad government frescoes, but WOW!!! I can't believe you're there! It's so exciting! I just finished reading 'Birth of Venus' (fabulous btw!) and I just wish I was over there with you!

Love you lots and lots! Party on and deal with you stress with alcohol!
