| [ | mood | | | happy | ] | | [ | music | | | Moulin Rouge | ] | Hey beloveds! I am OK, although still not king yet. And also youàll have to excuse the apostrophes, because despite writing an excellent essay on their use, Iùll not be using them on account of I canùt find them on the Eurpean keyboard. The second flight, which I thought would be hellish, was actually pretty good. The plane was really empty, so I got three seats to myself and was able to lie down and get about six hours of patchy but much needed sleep. The chicken looked very suspicious. Like a duck. Coming into Rome at dawn was AMAZING. All the lights of the city were just mind blowing, and Bri, Penny and I were almost speechless. I counted eleven nuns at the airport. They were proper nuns too, with wimples and everything. I was quite tired. The bus trip to Florence was four hours. The first two hours were fantastic, as we were driving through the countryside spotting aqueducts and mediaeval defence towers (shutuphistorygeek). Tuscany is beautiful. After a couple of hours though, everyone was a bit tired of travelling. Lydia fell asleep next to me, and as there were no nuns to spot, I turned Caspian on and listened to music. We arrived in Florence around 1, but our rooms werenùt ready, so Hazel, Lydia and I went and got lunch. A guy tried to sell me tissues on the street and then tweaked my nose when I refused. So THAT was a bit weird. The worst thing about Florence so far is that everyone but us is so well dressed. We keep walking past impeccably groomed women and men and I feel very inferior in my unironed khakis and Kathmandu windcheater. This has been exacerbated by shopping for boots (saw a lovely pair in Zara, 130 Euro, havenùt tried them on, most that Iùve tried dont fit my orthodics) as shop assistants are mostly the same but worse. My Italian is very very bad, as all I end up saying is grazie, buongiorno and after an afternoon shopping, pelle? and molto bello. My roommates, Hazel and Katrina are just lovely, and dont snore at ALL, which is a blessing that I do not underestimate. (Hi Fache!) Hazel bought boots, and theyre really cool. We had our first class this morning, and it was awesome. Started at the Arno and ended up at the Baptistry. I cannot express how lucky I feel to have this opportunity to see the things Ive heard about for so long. It is so incredible to look out our window in the morning and see buildings that have been there for centuries, and to walk through streets that great artists and humanists once walked. We passed a building today that I think said Michaelangelo was born there. Liek, OMG so totally cool!!1!1!11!!elevntyone!! AND its sunny. I blame you all for the fact that I have only ONE short sleeved tshirt, because the weather so far has been permanently Summer morning weather. It is GORGEOUS. Other things I blame you all for are the fact that noone has pinched my bum yet, and I havent had ANYTHING stolen, despite having a decoy wallet STICKING OUT OF MY POCKET when walking through the San Lorenzo market. What is wrong with my bum, and why is my stuff not worth stealing. SO INSULTED BY FLORENCE AS A WHOLE. I got a great sleep last night - eight hours. Mmmm. And I felt great this morning. Have also been eating well (Cream on a pizza is something I feel we should import into Australia). The Net near our hotel is five Euro an hour, but Hazel and I found this place with is 1.5 an hour, so if we can find it again, I should be able to post a couple of times a week. Much love to my family and friends, especially those who commented on my last entry, and Laura, Claire, Kelly and Sam, who messaged. Hope youre all well. Lots of love, Katherine |

Thank you!
And of course I do. Don't like it being underappreciated though.
I DID buy earplugs and they actually like, BLOCK SOUND. It is SO cool. On the plane I was near this guy with one of those gurgley, wet snores - about a thousand times worse than yours - and I put the plugs in AND I COULDN'T HEAR HIM ANY MORE!!!!! Awesome.
Shutup. Showoff. I feel you should know that on the way back to Rome, we're stopping in Florence and if I have money left (which I won't) we are going SHOPPING.

A thousand times worse than mine? *G*
Which earplugs did you get? I have heaps of free-from-Dad's-work ones, but I don't know that they block sound, more just take the edge off it (for concerts and stuff) so maybe I should buy some good ones...
Hehe shopping, that'll be SO much fun! *eyeroll*

I woke up on Saturday morning and there were sun dried tomatoes left in the fridge for my lunch. I knew something strange must have happened. Oh yeah Katherine is gone. Only way I could tell !
Glad the trip has started well. Give the Travelex thing a couple of days they have yet to clear the BPAY from last Thursday (slack buggers !) so there is only your initial amount in there.
Mum says not to get too cocky about the weather, she has Weatherfox on the browser set to Florence and it says it is currently 2 degrees with an expected top of 8 on Sunday. Therefore she expects you to be wearing your thermals. She also had me install FoxClocks so the browser tells her the time in Italy on the status bar. Still apart from that she is completely relaxed about you being on the other side of the world.
When you get to Santa Croce I want a photo of the Duomo from there. After all if Michaelangelo reckons thats the view he wants for eternity its good enough for me. Also count the steps to the top of il Duomo I thought there were 460 when we were there but the guidebook says 463. Just a small thing but its best to have things straight.
As far as the bum stuff is concerned, we will just have to ignore those sorts of comments otherwise Oma will get her thin lipped look.
Love and kisses all us at 24 D.

That is not RIGHT, for you to have sundried tomatoes! You must post them to the hotel IMMEDIATELY so that I know you are sufficiently miserable.
I haven't had to withdraw any money yet (tell Abuelo and the Sanchezes that those Euros have come in VERY handy, and have covered all my expenses so far) but when I do I'll make sure to only withdraw up to 140E from Travellex.
It is kind of cold now. Feel sort of a little bit stupid. I wore my thermals yesterday, so you can inform her of this! I'm glad she's coping! And I have my watch set so I can check the time in Melbourne too.
Shall try to remember about the photo and the steps.
Love and kisses back!

Bellaaaaaa!!!! (trans. Beautiful!)
Ciao! (trans. g'day)
Well you did say your Italian is awful! Am happy to help...no need to thank me!
Now listen here darling you just parade your Kathmandu jumper around like it is Gucci and you will be part of the club, just pretend that they are an up and coming Aussie designer! I particularly recommend picking off pretend lint and dusting off the sleaves in order to pull it off!
*goes out to check mail box* Just letting you know that my postcard hasn't arrived yet, thankyou for sending it so promptly though! *hugs* I was expecting a few days delay as Italian post can be awful, I know it will be here soon though! :P
Summer weather...pft...I give it another day! You'll soon be burning your t-shirt for extra warmth!
I'm so glad you're having a fabulous time darling! It sounds so so so awesome!
Love you!

Ciao bella!
My Italian IS terrible, although luckily I knew those two words!
I don't think ANYONE could pass Kathmandu off as designer gear frankly. At the end of my trip, I think I'll stop here and do some proper shopping.
I bought some postcards yesterday, so one of them shall be sent to you, I promise!
Yeah, gave it another day and I pretty much am.
And it is.
And I love you too!

Jelly thinks you have a great arse... and we'd 'pick your pocket but accidently grab a little more' anyday.
(From jordan).. 'cream on a pizza sounds kinda weird.. and come to think of it kinda dirty.. let's not go there...'
Also, am muchly confused by wimple comment - shall just assume it is a cross between a wrinkle and a dimple.
Am glad you are having so much fun... miss you already..
Jelly. xx

Hee! Thanks Jelly!
I thought cream on a pizza sounded weird too; that's why I ordered it. But it was surprisingly good, although VERY filling. I couldn't finish it. And the dirty thing had crossed my mind, but there isn't anyone here who I can confide in about guttermindedness. *cries*
A wimple is one of those headpieces that nuns and medieval women wore. Kind of squarish. I want one.
Miss you both too, and look forward to seeing you in Rome!

Oh you lucky thing! It sounds like you're having a great time.
I'm so sorry we didn't get to catch up before you left. We Tintern-ites will just have to pull our thumbs out and organise your welcome home party instead.
Don't worry about you Italian being awful, I'm sure it can't be any worse than mine (and my Grandma's an Italian teacher. She'd kill me if she ever heard me attempt Italian) Just look at the ceiling, bit your bottom lip, and look like your brain's hurting and most people will put you out of your misery by speaking English instead.
It sounds like you Mum is taking you being on the other side of the world VERY well! I think mine would die if I did what you’re doing. Mind you, my Mum cried when I went on year 9 camp, and when ever I go overseas no-one’s aloud to speak my name in the same room as her, so I guess she’s just a wimp.
Don’t worry about your ass. Maybe they just think you’re some sort of Australian royalty (coz you’re wearing your outfit from up-and-coming new Australian designer, Kathmandu) and they don’t dare in case your guards come after them :)
Good luck finding the internet café again, and enjoy the next few days getting to know the area.
Sarah XOXOXOX

I am having a great time!!! But of course am looking forward to seeing you all when I get home.
I wouldn't put bets on my Italian being worse than yours. It's pretty freakin bad!
She does seem to be taking it well, doesn't she? *Sends love to Mum*
I am not worried about my ass. I know that my ass is fabulous; I'm just a bit distressed that it's not up to Italian standards!
Thanks darlin! Good to hear from you.

Glad to hear you're there safe and sound and having a good time :). I can hardly imagine how amazing it must be to walk around such historical places...
I agree with Sarah about the whole pulling-thumbs-out thing – very slack of us.
Just listen to your arse songs (if you have them, which I’m sure you do) for a while and that’ll give you confidence in your bum again!!
Arrivederci! xx
